Chador-mekhela, drums, keyboard, guitar, cultural activists, bihu and Being Assamese

Image
Courtesy: Raul de la Nuez Recently, in one of the Bihu functions (April, 2015), one of the leading female singers of Assam was not allowed to sing for not wearing Chador Mekhela by the committee members. (Chador-mekhela is the traditional Assamese dress worn by women.) What I feel personally in that case, even the male singers, including Papon, Zubben, should be asked to wear Dhoti-Kurta or ban them too. Why this unfairly prejudiced view? And all the committee members also should be wearing Dhoti-Kurta or Chador-Mekhela all the time. Do they? Embarrassing moment for Assam and Assamese culture. This is not culture, This is not Bihu. I understand that cloths are integral part of any culture; but cloths alone can't defy culture. If one has to follow one of the cultural aspects with full devotion, he has to follow everything with complete honesty and sincerity. That means, if one has to wear mekhela-chador to defy bihu, she can't actually use keyboard, guitar or drums in bih...

Uber and Ola Cabs in Bangalore - there's still hope!

Image
Some time back I wrote about my rendezvous with Meru, Taxi For Sure and other Taxicab services in Bangalore . I almost lost hope. But then, after two incidents, I regained my trust in Bangalore taxicabs, although believing in the honesty and reliability of a taxicab service in Bangalore is somewhat chucklesome. Ola Cabs I went to a late night party at a friend's place which was almost close to 25 kms from my place. And by the time we finished few bottles of 'happy water', it was almost 1 AM. And to catch an auto was out of question as I had to walk through the lonely roads for 15 mins before I could reach the main road. I am somewhat afraid of darkness. So, my friend asked me to call Ola Cabs. I first denied and tried calling Taxi For Sure giving into my regular habit. As usual, they 'didn't have a taxi for sure.' Hence I had to call Ola after browsing through the net for their number. It took just couple of seconds before a very professiona...

Taxi For Sure, Easy Cabs, Meru Cabs - not enough taxi services in Bangalore!

Image
As frequent traveler within the city who doesn't like either driving or public transportation, I mostly rely on cabs for commute. Taxicabs arrived in 1911 to complement horse wagons. But many a time, I wished horse wagons continued their services. Infact, my folks used to tell me tales about how they used to travel in 'bullock carts'. With the current traffic situation in the Indian cities, that looks like a viable option. I have a neutral opinion on most of the cab services in Bangalore. Taxicab service is a lucrative business. One can conveniently book a cab from the thousand companies listed on Google. What happens next? When the taxi should arrive at your doorstep, you get a call from a drunk driver that he has reached some place unknown to you, to pick you up. Most of the time, you have to wait outside, on the street waiting for the driver, while giving instructions over the phone (Sounds familiar? Remember the time in school/college when you would wait for your swe...

Google Adsense - does it work?

Image
When I created my first blog using Blogger in 2007, I came across with this particular site called ' Adsense ' through which one can earn money from Google . I personally don't believe in free money. So never felt the urge to use Adsense in anyway. A check issued by Google Adsense But I did get addicted to Blogger (also known as Blogspot) because personally I liked to work with HTML and CSS and Blogger made it real simple. I created about 8 blogs. Though some of them are deleted now, I do run few quite popular blogs like - North-East India , EF News International and Eastern Fare and today I have many friends who regularly post on these sites. As the blogs became popular, I thought of paying a small amount of money to the people who write for me and my organisation. And I did so from my pocket. Then the idea struck me - "Why not check out Adsense?" and if I can make some money out of it, I don't have to burden my purse. Now, what is Adsense? ...

Slums of Slumdog Millionaire

Image
This is not a review about the movie. Nor this is about the Oscars. Thre's no denial that Slumdog Millionaire is unimpeachably an fantabulous crowd pleasing movie, its narration and technical excellency being its added advantage. But what I want to talk about is " Who are the real Slumdogs here?? " From the different circumstances I would like to believe that Mr Rahman or Anil Kapoor are the real "Slumdogs". They couldn't suppress their "Monkey Nature" when the film was nominated for the Oscars. Infact Anil Kapoor was behaving like a 'CHILD' when he was talking bout his 'Armani'. (Every Tom, Dick and Harry wear Armani in Oscars). He did nothing in and for the film. The film was tremendously wonderful for people to watch because of the natural acting by Azharudin Mohammed Ismail, Rubina Ali and other actors. Ofcourse including Dev Patel (i suppose he's the next Big Thing), Freida Pinto, (Natural) Irfan Khan and Saurabh Shukl...
