Music, a deep dive

Image
Jim Ankan Deka and Rittique Phukan at BFlat, Bangalore (Nov, 2014) In over a decade of experience in music instruction, often have I come across people with diverse outlooks towards music - for most, music is a form of entertainment, for some it is an art to be passionately pursued and mastered, for some it is ‘dope’ and for some its nirvana. What strikes me odd is that a very small percentage of music enthusiasts try to explore the concept “MUSIC” in itself. What is music, why does it exist, how did it evolve and what good does it do us anyway? Well to begin with the history of music dates back to times beyond the days of yore, right from the inception of civilization. Music, or rhythmic sound, stood at the cradle of all religions. The rhythmic articulation of time by means of an instrument conflating with melody can be considered as Music. Listening to music is a psychosomatic (A descriptive term for the relationship between the mind and body) experience that, apart from crea...

India's 68th Independence Day - a tribute

Image
Here's a tribute of mine to India; tribute to the national anthem of India - Jana Gana Mana. Music - Jim Ankan Deka | Animation - Prashanth Kumar About the National Anthem of India "Jana Gana Mana" is the national anthem of India. It was first sung in Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress on 27 December 1911. Written in highly Sanskritised (Tatsama) Bengali, it is the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The poem was translated into Hindi-Urdu by Abid Ali. Tagore wrote down the English translation of the song and along with Margaret Cousins (an expert in European music and wife of Irish poet James Cousins), set down the notation at Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh, which is followed only when the song is sung in the original slow rendition style of singing. However, when the National Anthem version of the song is sung, it is often performed in the orchestral/choral adaptation made by the English comp...

Nixobdo Nilim - our new Assamese music video

Image
The tune hit me the moment we landed in Gokarna . A pristine region in Karnataka, Gokarna lies very close to Goa. But it's far away from the touristy haste and hooey. The stochasticity of the beaches and the surrounding scenario refresh the mind and the soul. Hence, it's easy to fall in love with everything that's around. A dancer on Om Beach, Gokarna (photo - Jim Ankan Deka) Nixobdo Nilim means Silent Horizon. And that's what I found while sitting on the beaches of Gokarna. That's what I have seen people doing there - just looking into the horizon; and (probably) keenly relishing the fragrance of the distant dark-crested rocks. We were four friends and shot each others fun moments with our video camera without any script or storyboard. Later used those videos for the song while writer Parmita Borah came up with a nice story for the song. While Antara Baruah acted as a beach and music loving damsel, our friend Mickey Bora took care of the logistics. And vo...

Copied songs of Bollywood - music piracy?

Image
There are hundreds of songs in Bollywood which are directly copied, adopted or inspired from other songs. Some of these songs saw huge success in the Bollywood film industry. What I don't understand is, where we have certain music directors who have been engaged in making their own music and mark, how can another bunch think of coping the tunes of some other songs and present as their own work? Well, below are few very famous Hindi film songs which got the popularity among Indian people, but actually were adopted or copied from works by other musicians and music directors. Original song TAK BISAKAH from the album Alexandria (2005) by Peterpan ZIGEUNERJUNGE released as a single in 1967 by Alexandra (Doris Treitz Nefedov) YA GHALI (Arabic song) from the album Qissati (2002) by Guitara AH REUM DA OON SA RAM from the Korean series Nae ireumeun Kim Sam-soon (2005) by Seo Yoo Suk RETURN TO THE ALAMO (an instrumental track) from the album Tasty (1977) by The Shadows (Orches...

Derek Paravicini - a name attached with scintillating pianistic abilities

Image
There are people we say who are gifted. There are people who are differently abled. And there are people who have triggered their talents to do extraordinary deeds. But what can we say about a person who can listen to a ten minutes piano solo once and deliver a ditto rendition instantly? Can we call that person Superhuman? Derek Paravicini is a pianist with superhuman talents. He is one of the few gifted people with 'absolute pitch'. He can listen to a song or tune once and can perform it on piano exactly the same. He can identify every note in a chord. While most musicians can pick out only five notes from a chord, Derek can distinguish up to 20. The irony is, Derek is blind and was born with a 'savant syndrome'. Derek was born to Nicolas Paravicini and Mary Ann Parker Bowles on July 26, 1979. He was a 25 weeks premature baby weighing just a pound and a half and due to the oxygen therapy given during his time in a neonatal intensive care unit, lost his eye sight. H...

Make music with Google Translate | Beatbox

Image
Well, while I was checking Google Translate , I fumbled into this wired (amazing?) phenomena - Google Translate can create rhythmic beats! How? Here is how - ► Open Google Translate or click here . ► Change the "Detect Language" to German or Czech. ► Type some random characters (Eg: bschk bschk bschk bschk pv pv pv zk bschkzk bschkzk pv pv pv zk bschk bschk bschk bschk pv pv pv zk ) ► Click the "play" button. More theory about this by Alexia Tsotsis . And here is a guide to make your own beats. Do create your own beat-box and don't forget to upload on YouTube or Soundcloud. Have fun

EastWards featured on Music Aloud's new album Strings Attached

Image
It was long before I met Suchethan when I first wrote the song EastWards. I made a small video with photos of Nagaland (a North-East-Indian state) and needed background music. I am a fan of American guitarist Eric Johnson and the music for the video popped in my mind after listening to Eric Johnson and Jeff Skunk Baxter's acoustic duet . EastWards - Jim Ankan Deka and Suchethan Rangaswamy Later, when I met Carnatic classical vocalist and veena player Suchethan Rangaswamy from Bangalore, I thought of collaborating with him for my 2012 album Timeless . We made quite a few tracks before I selected EastWards for Timeless. As I already had the guitar part ready, I made him listen to it and asked him if he could strum his veena for the song. He showed his 20 years of devotion and magic as he went on playing the Indian classical instrument along with acoustic rock music. According to people who have heard the song - EastWards sounds like Indian Blues - whatever that means. But yup...

Verified musician or band page on Facebook - does it help?

Image
Updated - August 21, 2014 Click Here to request Facebook for verification if you are a celeb or notable person. Read the full article below F ew years ago when I created a page for legendary American guitarist Eric Johnson on Facebook , I had no idea about verified pages as well as terms of creating a musician or band's page on Facebook. I created the page when I didn't find any official or a proper page giving details of the guitarist. Later, when I was contacted by the management of Eric Johnson to re-create my page as the official page of Eric Johnson on Facebook, I came to know few things. What is an Official Facebook Page? First, Facebook Pages are for musicians, bands, authors, celebrities, businesses, organizations and brands to share their stories and connect with people. Though many times I come across with pages which have no relevance to any of the above. Why do we need a page? Well, profiles are kind of private - mainly for friends and in some rare cases - f...

There was a time when people would give their entire savings to get featured by MTV and yet, it never came easy. iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Spotify and other platforms for Indian musicians

Image
Many budding musicians and bands from India have been asking me a question for quite some time now - ' how to sell music on iTunes or Amazon or distribute music online? ' Till two years ago I thought it was a time consuming process. I never even bothered to try that myself. I was happy sharing my music through Reverbnation , SoundCloud or MySpace for free. Now, sharing your music with people for free is not a very bad idea if you want to get noticed. Once you have enough fans on Facebook and followers on Twitter , you should think about selling your music. If you are in the US or Europe, distributing or selling music online is not going to be a big deal. But if you are in India and not really sure about publishing your music on platforms like iTunes or OVI (Nokia Music), the number of times you bang your head on the wall will be more than the number of concerts you do. After much research (with food, beverage and sitting in front of laptop for days), I came to an unders...
