Indian telcos killed VAS business. Now they're out to kill your business. - Mahesh Murthy

Image
Some of you may remember the huge hype around VAS (Value Added Services) startups in India less than a decade years ago - remember SMSing to get your horoscope for the day, or a cricket score update? The story was all about how they'd create great content for distribution on the telcos' networks and how we'd see new giant companies being formed. Fast forward to today - the telcos' user base is ten times larger - but do you see any of those VAS companiess around? They're all virtually dead - and the telcos killed them. And they did so with a simple weapon - they charged a toll tax of 80% or more on all revenues generated by the VAS startups on their networks. VAS companies are long gone - the telcos killed and ate the golden geese, and golden eggs are now hard to come by. But rather than learn from this debacle - they're out there to find and kill the next golden egg. And that's you, dear Indian internet entrepreneur. You're going to be the next ...

Google Chromecast in India | connect your smartphone and laptop to a big screen TV

Image
Google Chromecast I had been looking for a device to connect my Samsung Galaxy s4 and Laptop to my (non-smart) LG 42" TV. Although on the net I found many devices, most of which were not available in India or have exhorbitant price tags. And then I came across with Google's new magic device ' The Google Chromecast '. What is it? With Chromecast you can use your phone, tablet or laptop to browse and cast content to your TV, play and pause and control the volume of the TV directly. With the content streaming, you can also multitask - send emails or surf the web - while seeing what is on the TV screen. All wirelessly. This means, you no longer have to check videos on you 4 or 5 inch screen of your mobile phone but enjoy those in your big screen TV and also enjoy them in HD; controlling everything from your couch. How to connect? Very simple. The device is like a pen drive (a 2.83-inch (72 mm) HDMI dongle) which can be connected to the TV's HDMI port and ...

Make music with Google Translate | Beatbox

Image
Well, while I was checking Google Translate , I fumbled into this wired (amazing?) phenomena - Google Translate can create rhythmic beats! How? Here is how - ► Open Google Translate or click here . ► Change the "Detect Language" to German or Czech. ► Type some random characters (Eg: bschk bschk bschk bschk pv pv pv zk bschkzk bschkzk pv pv pv zk bschk bschk bschk bschk pv pv pv zk ) ► Click the "play" button. More theory about this by Alexia Tsotsis . And here is a guide to make your own beats. Do create your own beat-box and don't forget to upload on YouTube or Soundcloud. Have fun

Google Adsense - does it work?

Image
When I created my first blog using Blogger in 2007, I came across with this particular site called ' Adsense ' through which one can earn money from Google . I personally don't believe in free money. So never felt the urge to use Adsense in anyway. A check issued by Google Adsense But I did get addicted to Blogger (also known as Blogspot) because personally I liked to work with HTML and CSS and Blogger made it real simple. I created about 8 blogs. Though some of them are deleted now, I do run few quite popular blogs like - North-East India , EF News International and Eastern Fare and today I have many friends who regularly post on these sites. As the blogs became popular, I thought of paying a small amount of money to the people who write for me and my organisation. And I did so from my pocket. Then the idea struck me - "Why not check out Adsense?" and if I can make some money out of it, I don't have to burden my purse. Now, what is Adsense? ...
